Alternate spellings

At what point does an alternate spelling become a "curse" to the poor kid? Common differences like Alisha/Alicia, I can understand. But I've heard of some that take it farther... like:

Arik (for Eric)
Cebastian (Sebastian)

What do you think?

I also would have to agree some parents take it too far. If you want a unique name go for a unique name, not a common name spelled differently like Arik!

I agree. The kid is going to have to correct people over and over for the rest of their life. And deal with things when they get paperwork and stuff and the name is misspelled. Just a pain.

Keep it traditional. Remember those license plates we would put on our bikes as kids? You'll never find that with a unique spelling.

Yeah, keep it as it normally is. Their early life has been challenging enough without being called Arik, Cebastian or other misspelled names and made fun of by their friends.

Tomatogwen, I agree with you. Now a days it is a pain the neck trying to find a personalized gift when on vacation. Why the insistence for being different? There is nothing wrong with having a traditional name easy to spell and pronounce.

I went for traditional names. I don't want to make it harder for my kids to learn to write their names. Also, I want people be able to pronounce them, and not have to spell it for everyone.
