Autism and school

School starts tomorrow for my kids. Tonight I have to go to the school for a meeting. I always hate having to fight with the school about the education and care of my autistic child. How do others with special needs kids cope with schools?

Are there no facilities set up for coping with autism in the school? Where I live there are always special ed teachers who meet with you to discuss specific needs.

Will they do an IEP? Can you send the child to a private school? While autism is still not well understood in most public schools, there seems to be a greater understanding in many areas than there was a few years ago. Do you take your child to a DAN doctor? Perhaps the child's doctor can be of help in accessing special educational opportunities.
