Everyone gets to hold their baby after they've given birth for a few minutes before they get taken to the nursery, but how long was it before you really felt ready to hold your new one? Did you want to get back to your room as soon as possible and see your new baby or did you want to sleep for a bit?

With the whole family in the waiting room I had no chose but to freshen up. We all waited together until the nurse brought her in. We all had the water works going after she was born and they started all over again once she was in my arms.
A little later my mother herded everyone together to leave so Mom and Dad could have some bonding time. Dad stayed a little longer. He left after awhile and then the nurse came to take the baby back to the nursery. I crashed then. Slept straight through until the nurse brought her back for her feeding.

With my son, five years ago I had no one to tell me exactly how much 'umf' it took to pop a child out, even though my true labor was only 45 minutes of push time, my arms were so heavy after wards, for the first hour or two I did not want to hold him for fear of my arms just letting go and dropping him. I had his father get into bed with me, and secure my arms so I could finally hold my son, after about 5 hours the pain wore off and I had no issues.
With my girl last year, the same thing happened, but it was much less than the first time (more than likely since I knew it was coming), so it was not nearly as much of an issue.
With the son, I wanted to sleep so much, but the adrenaline was too much, after my daughter was born I was hungry and when the nurses took her to the nursery (about 3 hours after she was born) my nurse told me if I could get my butt off the bed (after epidural) I could go get food/smoke/etc.
Willpower and all, with my legs still half asleep, I managed to get about 6 inches off the bed, and then with husband wheeling me downstairs, ate a foot long subway and had some star-bucks. :D

I was desperate to sleep and a little more desperate to see him. So I held him and demanded he be brought back to my room asap. Kept his bed in there as much as I could until about 24 hours later. THEN I wanted to sleep. He was crying and hungry and I was DYING. They took him to the nursery and let me sleep. lol I felt a little guilty when I woke up, but at least I was awake enough to feel guilty!!
