I was wondering if anyone has ever used this with their children. I have worked with many kids and it seems that the ones who have signs seem less frustrated when wanting something than the ones that don't have any communication.

I did! I loved it!! I did it with all three of my kids and it really helped. I wish I kept it up once they started talking....they are able to understand so much more than they are able to communicate verbally; being able to use sign language to communicate really eases a lot of frustration. I used Joseph Garcia's book - loved it!

J. Garcia's book is great. I think that baby sign language is the best thing because babies can tell you things you would not normally understand. Also motor skills develop before language so it is not that the baby does not understand they just can not speak and they are able to communicate from signing.

I've actually never heard of this but it sounds like a great idea. I've always taught my kids a sign for "all-gone" that my mom used to use on me (especially on the phone) and let me tell you its so ingrained I could do it across a room and they'd know what I meant. ;)

I didn't use it officially because I didn't know how to do it, but we had our own little codes that we used to communicate. He still uses themas he is not talking properly yet.

I taught my son the signs for milk, more and please and was really surprised how quickly he picked them up. By his first birthday he could easily do all of them. I wish I would have taught him a few other signs as well.

I think most people I know would try it but ended up learning their childs language instead whatever that may be. I guess sometimes its hard to do?
