Do you allow your children to eat candy? Do you allow them to eat it if it is free? I always let my kids eat it if it were free. I don't understand why they shouldn't be able to not eat it.

My children didn't get tons of candy. It's not healthy, it's bad for your teeth, there are number of reasons to avoid it. I always liked to give them fruit instead of candy. If they're not used to having all that sugar, it's surprising how much they enjoy fruit. Even now, my kids aren't really into sweets. They're health conscious. I'm sure my grandchildren will be too. Besides, diabetes runs in our family so we really don't want to take unnecessary chances.

Candy was one of those things that just can't be avoided. It's always at eye level in stores for kids, so there's no way to pretend that candy doesn't exist. I would let my kids have candy only a certain time during the day if it was in the house. Once they hit that sugar high, they're all over the place.

My mom gave me child as a reward for doing good things or being well behaved so I plan on doing that when my child is born.

You don't have to pretend it doesn't exist, but you can't give in to a child's every whim either. There is no point in an infant having sugar. They shouldn't come in contact with it at all until they're older. I believe the first sugary thing my daughter had was her birthday cake at her 1 year party (the smurfs one that made her poop blue). As they grew up, my kids would get candy occasionally. Just not very often, and not huge quantities at one time.
I made sure my children always brushed their teeth for at least 3 minutes, I had a kitchen timer in the bathroom. That was one thing I was strict on.

Kids will get candy one way or the other. Grands, Aunts, Uncles, you name it. Kids would have to go around with a sign on them that says, "Do not feed me candy unless it's sugar and preservative free. I only eat anti-oxidant chocolate bars...." Takes out all the fun of candy.

I let my son have candy often, but he brushes his teeth 3 times a day for 3 minutes each.
