This is a pretty popular topic. A new law just passed in washington making it so children had to be in at least a booster seat for even longer than already.
It's never a bad idea to be informed, so below see the AAP Car Safety Seat Guide 2007.

My little man has a Britax Marathon. I refused to put him in anything else. I spent oodles of time researching the safest carseats before he was born, and again and again, Britax just kept being the end result. So that's where we went.

I have a little one on the way, since you spent alot of time on research...would you have any recommendations on a good one to start with for a newborn? I have a few in mind but its always good to get other peoples thoughts.
My son, when born his grandparents decided to spend a ton of money on a Eddie Bruar one, cant remember the details since it was five years ago. :) My daughter right now has still her infant cart seat (made by Graco), 5 point harness, and works until she is 30lbs (she has another ten to go). We have never used the base, I thought at first it would be a quick and simple thing to use, but it is really just a pain to fool with and also a headache sometimes. If you have more information on the seat you use, I would love to hear it, I always end up getting mixed reviews when I try to find these things on line. :)

You can use the Britax Marathon for a newborn. Just set it so the baby is more laying back on the rocker, and get a support pillow for his neck. You'll find them at pretty much any store with a baby section. They are U shaped (upside down U) and curve around your infants head so their neck won't bend over before they can support their head alone or when they sleep.
