This isn't mainly about cars, just car seats. Many parents carry car seats everywhere with their child in them so they can sleep in them. I personally don't like this because it takes away from the bond of parent and child. I say just hold your baby close to you and rock them if they want to sleep. Bonding is such an important thing.

I think I might have to agree with you there. Bonding is such an important thing.

I don't agree. Bonding is a good thing no doubt but, holding the baby all the time or always keeping it "to" close isn't good for the child or parent.

But I feel depending on the car seat and lugging it around all over the place can also give parents trouble.

Not really. The carseat has many safty guards that are good out of the car as well. Plus, the child is quite comfy in one.

You can't carry the baby all the time. You have stuff to do. The car seat is the best way to keep your baby with you and still get your stuff done.

I don't think I would be able to keep my child in my lap while I'm driving. Doesn't sound too safe to me, in fact it reminds me of...

Car seats may impede bonding with the child but there is plenty of time for that elsewhere. I don't drive too often (just to and from the office, really) so it isnt much of a concern.
