Are you going to teach your children how to excercise? My wife is wanting to do this with our children as soon as possible, but I feel that with all the energy they have, that they will burn it all of by playing. What do you think?

As long as they're running and playing with other children, I don't see a need to teach them an exercise routine. But if it appears they're turning into couch potatoes, I'll have to intervene at that point.

If the children will be in our home long-term, I will put them in age-appropriate activities. I'll probably choose dance or gymnastics. Other than that or a sport, how do you "teach" a child to exercise? They're too young for workout videos.

My daughter was always a skinny child. She got a lot of activity. We went to the park at least every other day.

My last child is putting on weight too fast and we are getting a bit concerned. Our doctor says it's not yet a problem but he has cut certain foods from her diet. She is somewhat active, especially at school but I think we are going to enroll her in some dance or swimming class.

I think that it is very important to raise an active child. I am a big advocate for "turning off the tv" and running around. I do not think that children need to belong to a gym or anything rash like that but I think that it is important to keep them moving.

I don't have a problem with that yet, since my son has to be extremely tired or feeling sick to sit still. He is always running around, even when he is sitting in his car seat, he is busy flailing his legs and arms.

In my opinion children are actually good for the parents because it keeps the parents moving and not just sedentary. I have never had a problem with a sluggish child and I have seen many of them.

My daughter works out with me in her own way fairly often. She loves the music I play and she gets up and dances and tries to copy what I am doing.

But that is the closest I will come to teaching her to exercise. Hopefully she won't ever need more.

I think organized activites that encourage movement can be very fun, things like gymnastics or a sport class. I also really really love the idea of yoga for children. I'm about the most inflexible person there is, but I enjoy yoga. I do it in front of the TV watching a tape. My kids like trying the moves with me. I'd love it if they took a liking to yoga and kept it up. I don't think an organized exercise class is necessary, though.
