So, I'm starting to gather my list of pediatricians and set up interviews. What kinds of questions should I ask? Things to look for in the office?

Should I consider family doctors? Are they as knowledgable about kids?

Some things I looked for in my pediatrician: what is their availability on weekends? do they take time with you and listen to your concerns rather than rushing off to the next appointment? what is the average wait time in the office?

Just a few ideas - good luck.

How easy is it to get in without an appointment?
Are sick people roomed quickly (ie, not sitting in the waiting room sharing germs forever)
Is there an after-hours line?
Are the peds thoughts on breastfeeding and vaccinations acceptable to you?
Does she/he have children of her own?
We see a family doctor. I like that she sees all of us and gets a good idea of family history. She is very knowledgable about children.

We don't have pediatricians here, just family doctors. But I made sure I had a few questions myself.
1) What are your views on breastfeeding? I wanted a doctor who was up to date on breastfeeding and wouldn't be trying at every visit to get me to switch.
2) What about after hours visits? What are your hours?
3) Are they up to date on the reccomendations by the AAP.
4) Are they the type to perscribe meds at any sniffle or let nature do it's job?

I found young doctors to be more knowledgable to the way things are done now, whereas the older docs were more set in their advice.
