At what age do you start giving your child chores and an allowance? How much do you give them?

They have to earn their keep for staying in the house, so we will definitely be having chores. It teaches them responsibility and gives them spending money on their own.

I think chores and allowance will start around 5 in our house. I think a good way to do it is get the same amount of cash as how old you are.

Chores and allowance start when school starts. And I think a fair amount is $1 per year of age per week. So, basically, they start out at $5 and it goes up $1 a year.

Since your systems are designed with allowance tied to chores, are you withholding allowance if chores are not done?

Definitely! I'm not going to take away their whole allowance because they forgot one chore, I'm not that hateful, but money will be subtracted for what does not get done. Of course it will be explained to them, "mommy has to take away $X because you forgot to *insert chore here*". Next time they have to do that chore, it's going to be in their mind that if they don't do it, they lose allowance money.

As long as I could remember, she helped me around the house. When she was younger, she would do smaller things for me like finding all of the socks and putting them into a basket. She got paid $15 a week.
