I saw these on Craigslist while looking for baby furniture for my best friend. They are fake cakes made out of diapers tied with pretty ribbons and with small toys/pacifiers/etc tucked in to create a cake to match the shower theme. I am trying to find a decent set of directions to make my own however as I figure it might be cheaper than the $30-50 for a plain cake without extras. Can anyone point me in a good direction?
I have never heard of this, any chance you have a picture of one that we could all see? Maybe you can find some ideas online from places that make the same, and be inspired by it. :)

Here's a couple I found while searching CL for what they might look like:

http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/bab/530217541.html
They seem to start at around $40 and go to $90 or more. Really cute idea though. I'll have to look around some of the crafting forums I am on and see if anyone has made one.
Never heard of them either, they sound rather interesting and cute though. I am sure they will make a hit at the shower when they are revealed.
This is the first time I’m hearing of this. A diaper cake, it sounds like a disgusting cake to me. Why would anybody want it?
I wonder, what was the creator is thinking when he creates his masterpiece.

He's thinking diapers are expensive and always useful, of course ;)
I've decided to go with a much more traditional gift as I haven't found a nice tutorial and that means I have no idea how much the diapers will run me in total. I still think they are adorable but I just don't have the info this time. maybe for her second. *groans*
I recieved one for my last shower. I thought it was neat. It's more fun than a plain old pack of diapers. I want to make a business selling them but don't know where to start.
I have never seen a diaper cake up close but I've seen pictures of them. They look so cute! I wish I had thought of this with my sister in laws baby, it would have been perfect.

There are even places that will make diaper cakes out of cloth diapers-and I'll be honest, I think that those are far more useful than disposables. Of course they are also more expensive.

I would hate to see the price on a cloth diaper cake. It would probably be much prettier since they are softer and not as shiny. I was just watching a news report on the "greener" alternative to regular diapers.

I did a quick Google and found cloth cakes on sale for $129 CND. Not sure what that is in USD.
From a personal point of view, the diapers I have bought and used, I could put a cake together for $150 that did infant and premium sized prefolds, covers and snappis with cloth wipes. That would cover maybe 2 years of diapering, though in truth you would want at least another $150 worth of fancier diapers too to supplement-maybe even another $300.
But keeping it in perspective, thats less than $500 for two years of diapers. If you were a tight wad with your sposies and only changed the kid six times a day (and I didn't, it was eight to twelve times, because sposies stink when wet) then you would be spending at least $1100 in diapers in that two years. Then there's wipes, another couple of hundred dollars.
Thats taking an average cost of 25c per diaper, not counting the fact that by the time you get to pull ups you are talking 50-56c per diaper so it could be a lot more. Then there is the fact that cloth diapered babes tend to potty train earlier, so you can add maybe another year in the highest priced diapers on top of that, plus wipes.
Finally, you can resell cloth when you are done, they have a high resale value on the premium brands. Or you can use them on a second, or even third child if you have more than one. $500 and you are done, diapering for three lifetimes of children.
Yep, it's an expensive cake, but the value is comparatively huge!
I find the diaper cake a great baby shower gift to give our new baby gift; it has all the essentials baby bits and bobs in and very practical too.
It looks great and with so many on the market you can pick and choose the one that best fits your budget.
They also have lots of different products in (the main one of course being diapers); a great gift for the mom and dad and the new arrival.
