View Full Version : Do Breastfed Babies Sleep Worse?

It certainly seems that my little one still wakes a lot to nurse when her peers are sleeping through the night and have been for months. Have you noticed a difference in formula and breast fed sleep?

I've never heard anything like that, but there's two ways of looking at it: one side says it would be nice to get a night's sleep and not have to wake to feed the baby but the other wonders why a simple dietary difference causes them to sleep all night...so maybe its better she wakes to feed more often?

They wake up more often, that's for sure (mine did at least), but I don't think babies are meant to sleep long stretches at first. I read something once. I don't remember where I read it from though.
Young babies' bodies sometimes forget to breathe, called sleep apnea, and I think that's one cause of SIDS. Formula lasts longer in the stomach so babies fall into a deeper sleep, increasing the risk of apnea. Breastmilk is easier to digest so babies wake up more, and therefore don't as easily fall into that deep sleep. Since they aren't sleeping as deeply when they stop breathing their body sort of wakes up from the shock and they remember to breathe.
Don't know if it's proven.
Formula feed babies seem to sleep longer b/c the formula takes longer to digest. I am not sure on specifics for BF as I was never able to do it myself.

I would imagine they aren't meant to sleep that long either. Most baby mammals don't. Its why people don't get puppies unless they want to be annoyed every hour or so to let them out. I imagine babies are the same, they get hungry and need to use the bathroom frequently.I know breast milk is easier to digest so that makes sense too. And you kind of knew when you decided to have kids you weren't going to get much sleep ;)

They are not supposed to sleep long. The natural sleep cycle of an infant is about an hour long, compared to four for an adult. Honestly this is natural until the child gets a lot older.
I never heard of it. Based on my nephew, he always he sleeps well at night. I do believe that breast feeding may help the bonding of the mother and child. If your going to breast feed the child, you may get some connections with the child. I think it’s like a psychic connection.
