So this morning we went to the hospital to have blood work done for a glucose tolerance test. They make you drink something thats like over-sugared orange soda, 10oz in 5 mins. Blood is drawn an hour later. I was wondering how average this is.

I know they are doing alot more tests because she was adopted as a 2yr old from El Salvador and has unknown medical history but she's never shown an inclination toward diabetes. Her adopted mom has it, so they always watched that kind of thing on all the kids routinely.

I think they have every pregnant woman do it. I failed my first one. So they sent me for a second, it was lime flavored something and GAG. The orange wasn't so bad. That lime stuff though. Never. Again. Thank goodness I passed the 2nd test!

I think whoever made that test, is pure evil.

The person who invented it really was evil. They make you fast for it-something that in itself can make many pregnant women sick with the morning sickness. Then they ply you with high sugar-and yeah you feel rotten.

The test has a high rate of false negatives, its terrible.

I have never gotten to the point with any of my three, that I could stand the test. Shortly after it was over, every single time, it came back up. I guess I was lucky I didn't manage to get sick on the doctor or nurse. My daughter had the same issue when she took her test, maybe it runs in the family.

I am sure that it makes a lot of women sick. To be fasting for that long and then have a horribly sugary drink is just awful. I am sorry that it hit you both so hard!

I had this done with my last two pregnancys. It was that awful sugery sweet orange or grape stuff. I was there for like 4 hours having blood drawn every hour. Two times from each arm. I always assumed this was because of my age. I was 39 with one and 43 with the last one. Maybe it wasn't but I did not have to have that done with the first two.

I had to drink orange once and one time grape since I did that with 2 of mine. It is sickening sweet. I was so glad to get that over with.

She had to go again and "failed" so she had to do it again. What exactly does it test for? They never really explained it to her and I'm really starting to wonder if there isn't an alternative way to test for the same thing...
