My daugher had our sweet grandson on the 18th of May. She had decided and was dedicated to full breast feeding until about six months. At three months she got mastitis (so did I when nursing man does that hurt), anyway finally had to quit breast feeding (doc's orders), although she fought it another few weeks. I have to tell you I couldn't believe it ! This baby went from somewhat fussy and not real happy. To the total opp.after getting on formula! This child laughs and smiles constantly (it has been close to two months now on formula). What do you suppose the trouble was? She appeared to have plenty of milk, and was very conscience about her food intake etc. Just wondered if anyone else has heard of this.

The things that the mother eats can pass through into the milk that her body makes. This includes things like dairy, and vegetables such as broccoli and other gas causing things. The benefit is that a breast fed babe will experience a wide range of flavours and so cope better with more unusual foods.

The downside is that if the child is sensitive to a food the mother eats, then the mother will need to do an elimination diet-strictly-to find out what the problem is. Sounds to me like this was the case.

Well, she tried all kinds of 'restrictions' etc. He wasn't really colicy or fussy like gas, but just more 'not happy'. We wondered if maybe the caloric content of her milk just wasn't high. In otherwords, although he ate all the time, and was plenty of milk, he was just never satisfied or full? That's what he acted like. Is that possible you think? Fortunately she was able to complete three months or so for him so that was good.
