View Full Version : Hand-Me-Downs
Do you use hand me down clothes? I don't think I will, I don't want my future children feeling like we don't care about him/her because we give them used clothes.

We used Hand Me Downs. The child should be happy for the clothes he has on his back.
Well, there's really nobody to get hand me downs from here. When and if we have a child there will probably be friends and family beating down our door with new baby stuff. I doubt we'd need hand-me-downs.

Hand-me-downs are the best thing going. Kids grow like weeds and a lot of the clothing is still in good condition. It also teaches the kids that if they have something new, that they want to keep nice, the older clothes can be changed into and keep the nice clothes.

When you have a large family, like I did, the clothes came in all sizes. Every now and then I would hit the second-hand clothing stores to throw some new old clothes into the mix. Coats were the things that not many wanted to give up on right away.
One time my hubby went to the Goodwill and bought two coats for our daughter. She was about 4 and he wasn't sure what size she was. So, he bought two really nice coats. One was two sizes too big and the other was even bigger than the first. All I can say is that we had coats for her for years after that...a real money saver...lol

With twins coming, we'll likely have to buy the majority of stuff. Although my sister-in-law probably still has a ton of baby clothes to pass on to us. It'll probably be a mix of half new and half hand-me-downs.
My younger sibling wear hand-me-downs. I don't think much of it, is what we have.
I have no problems using hand me downs. In my family it's a daily happening.
Yes, we used some hand me downs. They came from my wife's sister though when it came to my daughter. My son was the first grandchild born on either side of the family so he didn't have hand me downs.
If you family is anything like mine the hand me downs are in good shape, almost like brand new.

I agree, most kids do not care about the clothing, it is really the parents who care. You can get good quality hand me downs with name brands in many shops. You should re-consider this especially, when you children start growing fast and you are trying to keep up with their growth. You may find that if you are only buying new cloths you could be doing it more frequently than you expect.
I actually do both now with my girl, just like I did as with my first in 2002. There is nothing wrong with hand me downs, I had them, and new clothes. There are certain stages that children grow like weeds, and will just never fit in the same clothing more than afew times. Also, I have been in the situation that I was lucky to get hand me downs during the time I split with my sons father, his quote "go buy new things", this after I was the one that purchased all of our sons clothes. A friend actually drove through three hours of heavy traffic to bring something for my son I had needed that day. I will always be happy for that.
You can find alot of good deals with 2nd clothing, it just depends. I only purchase shirts/pants, nothing more persona like socks/etc. Also, my lawn guy just had his very first baby girl, so when he stops by and grabs a bag of clothes from our daughter, it avoids me driving down to the Salvation Army! :)

Hand me downs are awesome for young kids. I would never hesitate to use them. When they get a little older though they will also start wanting their own clothes.
