View Full Version : How much junk food is too much?

They ask you for it, they sometimes even end up begging for it! Of course I am talking about junk food, the thing that we all love, yet the dentists and doctors hate. How much junk food is a good amount in your opinion? Also, I am asking this for myself just as much as for my family. Thoughts?

Most times I think it ends up being too much when it starts to over run your food habits. Are you always wanting an unhealthy snack, would you rather have that than a normal good hearty meal? Things like that I would look out for.

I think it's fine in moderation-meaning less than one meal a week in my case. Any more than that and I would start to question my current lifestyle and activities that are causing me to be eating out so much.

I normally wouldn't feed more than one meal a week either. And maybe a snack or two a week, with the rest of the food being wholesome. I don't think we need to not allow children to never have sugar or junk food, but moderation is key. Otherwise they will have no coping skills when they no longer have us there to tell them what they can eat. Studies have been done that prove children who are not allowed to eat junk food will gorge themselves given the chance while children allowed junk food in moderation are more likely to pass it up.

Considering I myself live on junk food, it's hard to limit what junk food my son eats. I try my best to eat all the veggies and all the fruit myself so to put a good example but it doesn't always work. What I have learned is that kids will eat anything that has cartoons or funny characters in the package. So I bought little ziploc bags with designs and put fruit in them. I tell my son if he eats all the fruit, Dora the explorer can find things faster and scooby doo will catch more ghosts :D

There are lots of ways of encouraging healthier eating, like telling stories about the food. Or parties in tummies. Anything to avoid a big mac a day.
