View Full Version : If a family member uses your name?

When I was pregnant with my son we told my SIL what name we were thinking of for a girl. Obviously we didn't use it, but I was planning on using it if our third is a girl. Well, SIL is pregnant with a girl now and I just heard through the grapevine that she is using our name! I am beyond livid. She didn't even have the guts to tell me herself.

We live far away from them, so we could still use it, but it would just be weird.

What would you do?

Wow, that's really aggravating!!! I guess some might take it as a compliment, that she likes your taste, but I sure wouldn't!!!

Well, I would still use that name if you have a girl, because as you said you don't live near her. As far as what to do....I'm not sure about confronting her. If she's annoying enough to take the name, she's clueless enough not to get it if you complain to her, and she'll only get her nose out of joint.

This has happened to a couple of my friends as well. Personally, I would choose a different name. Honestly, there has got to be another one out there you like better it's just a matter of finding it!

If you like the name that much just call her up and remind her how much you liked that name. And how you had hoped to name your daughter that name some day.
Personally, I'm just not a beat around the bush kind of person. But there has to be a nice way to bring it up.

I would have it out with her too. Imitation is not the sincerest form of flattery, its like infringing on intellectual property rights, lol. I would tell her not only do you know she stole your idea, but doubtless other family members will remember and know as well. But hey, if she wants to be known as an idea stealer thats her choice... ;)

It depends on the relationship you had in the past. I would probably think of it in a honorable light. If the relationship is on the surface then it may not be seen as honorable. I hope you get it resolved soon.

Some people are very touchy when it comes to using "their" names. I knew of a little boy who had the same name as the one we gave our son, and I did get the feeling they were not pleased. The thing is, we named him that for completely different reasons.

Purple, in your case, I think you should be up front and speak to her about it, that is name stealing, she should brainstorm and get her own name.

That's one reason I chose not to tell anyone what names we chose. Then they couldn't steal the name. If it did happen, and I really loved the name, I'd still name my child the name. It's not like they'll see each other every day. But be sure to mention that you'll be trying for your little (insert name here) next year (or whenever).

The bad thing about is that, if she went ahead and named her baby that name, it would look to everyone as if she copied the name, instead of the other way around. The situation is really unfair.

I know exactly how you feel!

My friend and I always used to talk about names and I said if I had a girl I wanted to call her Xari, and I mean (That name is original, it's not like it was a coincidence) I had a little boy, but I still plan to have a girl and call her that.

My friend had a baby girl... and what did she call her???

Mmmmm.... so frustrating
