View Full Version : Learning to eat
My girl will be a year old in 2 weeks and about 4 days, I was really hoping that for her birthday, a cupcake would interest her enough to want to eat on her own. Sometimes she will try and grab the spoon from me (maybe once a week), but other than that, she is all "Feed Me". I never had this issue with my first, is anyone else stuck in this stage of transition? She does the pincher grasp (a little bit), have tried the puff things for her to pick up and eat, she hates them all Ive tried about 3 different kinds so far, and I even ate some (to try and entice her), yea they are not the most favor full of things to eat. :p Suggestions?

have you tried the baby cookies? the ones that look like a big peanut? i forget what they are called.. but they are big enough for them to grab and when they gnaw on them, they kinds of *melt* so they don't have to actually chew at them. I know a lot of moms use them for teething too. But maybe what you are giving her is too small for her to be interested? We even gave our 1yr old baby carrots, and he didn't have any teeth at the time. Our ped said they will gnaw at them and it wont hurt, just keep your eye out, but you would be surprised at what babies can/will eat if they like them. I thought she was nuts, but he loved them and to this day he wants the big bag of baby carrots to eat rather than anything else.
My kids loved Cheerios, but who doesn't? They really liked the crunchy sound it made when they chewed on them, also during teething. Those were the days!
My daughter wouldn't let her son have anything like that on his 1st birthday!!! She put baby cereal on top of a banana muffin like frosting. The miracle is he liked it. She said the sugar and stuff in a real cupcake or cake was not appropriate for a 1 year old. See what I mean when I say she's too strict?
Both of my boys were always “let me do it” with everything. I just gave in and let them feed themselves, it was only one more mess to clean up, no big deal. And they were making a bigger mess trying to get the spoon from me anyway.
I do remember them being nuts about Cheerios. I think I was cleaning those up for years!
I really think that Cheerios is the brand most are comfortable with giving their tots. All of mine did, and if memory serves me right, myself and siblings also. Kids and Cheerios go together well, alot better than kids and cake. Thats going to be one fun mess to clean up! I did it myself three times already and I cant wait til I can again next year with my grand baby.

I feel your pain. My daughter never really showed an interest in feeding herself. I have to remind her often to take a bite.
And it gets worse as they get a little older and can verbalise well; then it becomes 'feed me mummy.'
Alexis, your daughter may want to be fed now, but there are other things she will surprise you with. So, don't worry, she will do it in time.
