Shopping for a present for a baby shower for a friend I was shocked at how much maternity clothes are these days. I mean even from Walmart they are still pretty expensive. No wonder so many people wear sweat pants or stretchy pants instead. Any creative ideas to get around buying expensive clothes without looking frumpy?

There are so many GOOD second hand stores now, I bought tons (nearly all) of our daughters maternity close from two different second hand stores, and the great thing, when you're done, sell them back!

We don't have alot of nice ones here. And the Goodwill is literally picked over by an hour after they open because of all the stay at home moms who go their daily. The economy is pretty slim in some places and Goodwill is located in the poorer areas and downtown areas. We've been looking on Craigslist but its pretty hard to find stuff thats the right size and local.

When I was pregnant I just let everyone know that I welcomed hand me downs. In no time I had more clothes than I knew what to do with! Some of it was pretty bad... but I did get a nice number of cute outfits.

I dont even buy maternity clothes for my female pregy friends anymore, I go right to the mens department for random causal stuff, or we just go shopping from store to store until we find better prices, it might take longer, but its fun and a good days out too!

I lucked out really well at the motherhood maternity sales this black Friday/Saturday. I got hopefully everything I will need to carry me through the nine months on the one day for under $80.
Since it's too late for that I can only suggest buying one single item, and making it fairly utilitarian. Though in truth if it is a shower gift she is likely due not long from now, so maybe you shouldn't bother.

I was surprised myself how much maternity clothes are. Its insane how much more they charge for that sort of thing just because they can. Asking for hand me downs is a great idea if you have lots of friends. I know I had a clothing swap with some other pregnant girls and got some nice stuff. Everyone seems to have something they won't wear even if its only around the house.

I'm sure you got friends who have already been pregnant. Some of them might have kept some maternity clothes which have been forgotten already. If I have a pregnant wife, I would rather go to mom or to my mother-in-law (I hope not) and ask for any maternity clothes they are storing. Its only about 4 to 5 months to wear those clothes so it's ok with me if my pregnant wife (in the future) will wear second-hand clothes.
