How many of you encourage your kids to celebrate different holidays during winter? I remember being a kid and my mom's best friend was Jewish so she always gave me a Chanukah present that I got to open after we went to Temple. And then I got presents after church as well. I've always given holiday cards and tried to find non-specific ones because of this. I think it would be annoying having to get Christmas cards if I was Jewish or Chanukah cards if I was Christian. My wrapping paper is usually just wintery with penguins or movie characters instead of santa claus or Christmas sayings.
Do you think of these things as a parent? Do you have any special way of making you kids aware of other religion's traditions?

We are Christian, and for us the holiday isn't all about the presents. We try to center our Christmas celebration around church and family.
We do exchange gifts and cards, and I don't really care if they say Happy Chanukah, Merry Christmas, or Happy Holidays. It is the thought and the love that is behind the present/card/ whatever that matters!

I guess we know the religion of our friends so we should give them holiday presents according to their own holidays. It is also better to make the greetings in the cards as general as possible.

I can't stand the way cherished holy days have been thrown into a big melting pot. To me it's like we're losing the true heritage that is our Christmas, Chanukah, Solstace...etc, replacing it with a generic non denominational seasonal party.
I think we should be keeping the reasons for the celebration alive, not confusing them with others.
I look for wrapping paper, cards, decorations, that signify my celebration, Christmas, the birth of Christ. I won't buy anything generic, like santa, or happy holidays or seasons greetings.
Since we're not big on giving presents to everyone and the only cards I give are to family, whom are all Christian, there's no problem there. If I ever had a friend who celebrated something else, I'd wish them a happy____ (whatever they celebrate) instead of seasons greetings.
I hope that makes sense. I'm never good at voicing what's in my heart.

Since I was brought up in a multiple religion home, there has always been the celebration of various holidays during the winter season. Who else besides myself has tried celebrating yule, which is the holiday that help inspired the modern holiday of Christmas and it's customs.
