View Full Version : Nutrition During Breastfeeding

I know that when I was breast feeding, I still took vitamins and watched what I was eating. As much as I loved chocolate (and what women doesn't?..lol) and coffee and soda, I would cut down on my intake. Both the coffee and soda had caffeine. I would try to time having the drinks after my baby had been fed or when she was napping. I also drank more herbal teas.

I would also stay away from foods high in spice. No more burritos or tacos. I watched the veggies that would cause me gas, like brussel sprouts. Did anyone here watch their nutrition?

This is from an old pamphlet I still had stuffed in an old diaper bag. It was guidelines on what to eat when breastfeeding.

-Fresh vegetables and fruits (preferably those in season) of all types, eaten raw or cooked;
-Different grains (wheat, rice, corn, barley, millet) preferably whole, in various forms, in the form of whole or broken kernels, as well as semolina and flour (and products made from them including bread and pasta);
-Protein foods from animal sources (dairy products, eggs, meat and fish) and/or plant sources (lentils, beans, soybeans);
-Small quantities of fats, preferably uncooked, cold-pressed vegetable oils.

Basically, no canned or frozen vegetables, because they have preservatives and can be high in salt. I would eat rice that I would pan fry, with Pam sprayed first inside the pan, and throw in some tomatoes, spring onions, green pepper, mushrooms, and then I would add a can of tuna packed in spring water. It was great eaten hot or cold with a salad off the side.

It's a very good idea to watch what you eat. Your baby gets what you eat as well as all the stuff that's already in the milk. You can get your baby drunk if you nurse while drinking. They can taste the foods you eat in the milk. Breast fed babies have all the luck!
