I remember when I was going to school that we had recess. It was either before or after lunch. You either got to work up an appetite or work off the lunch...lol
Most schools today don't have recess anymore. I think that a shame. The school systems site a lot of reasons. They don't have the equipment, the insurance has gotten to high, they don't have enough teachers or assist. teachers to monitor the playground, etc.
Now we have obese kids. I wonder why??...duh! Kids, at one time, were very active. How many obese kids can you remember compared to the ones that we have today in schools? I can understand why the budget to music was cut, but recess and P.E.?

I can see why the inner city schools may have cut recess, but I never understood why the county schools cut recess. If it's monitor on the playgrounds they need then I bet the parents would do it. Recess tired me out though. Just wanted to curl up and go to sleep at my desk....never got my work done....lol

I went to inner city schools and we never had recess. My parents said they had recess in school... but they were from a small town and the school they attended was very small. I think they probably did away with it to shorten the school day.

Recess didn't shorten the school day, but it was a way to de-stress the kids and teachers. I had recess and my school didn't have air condition. Believe me, when it was hot outside recess was very looked forward to.

We didn't have recess. Did you guys go to country schools or something? I don't think they do that in the cities.

I went to city schools and had recess, but when my children went to school, they had either lessened the time for recess or cut it out completely.

The most we ever had, and this was when I was a little kid, was like 15 minutes outside if we finished our lunch early. I don't remember them calling it recess though, it just part of lunch hour.
I had recess. It was fun, especially kickball. In middle school, we got an extended lunch so we can do activites outside.

That is not the only problem, many have also cut physical education, and that is why Richard Simmons has been trying to fight to get it back in schools. He understands the need for it as much as other subjects.
