Has your child ever had surgery? My daughter had to have a muscle biopsy when she was 7. She was scared going in, but coming out felt happy. She actually kind of liked it and wanted to get another one (I put an end to that wish however). What has your child gotten?

That's been a big area of concern for my husband and I. I had a lot of surgery when I was a kid, and I'm hoping none of my medical problems will be inherited by our children, when and if we manage to conceive. After spending a lot of time in Children's Hospital, and seeing so many kids having major life threatening illnesses, it made me realize there really is nothing more heartbreaking than a sick child. I hope mine will be healthy.

I was hit by a car when I was four. I was in a coma, had brain surgery, and spent my fifth birthday in the hospital. Then I got my tonsils out at 12.

No parent wants to see his child have unnecessary surgeries or go through horrible accidents. Just prepare your child as best you can and don't frighten her unnecessarily.

Lily, I can understand that being a concern for you and your husband if you went through a number of surgeries as a child. Be sure not to project your fear onto your child.

None of my children had to have any type of major surgery, but my son had to have the tip of his index finger sewed back on. It was a freak acciedent, but it was still just as scarey.

I was a pile of jello inside, but had to keep up the "Not To Worry" face for my son. It was stitched back on in the ER. It was also the first time that he had to go to the ER, so I had double duty in that I had to tell him that this was a good place and that his finger would be fixed back in no time. It was hard to tell him that it wouldn't hurt when I know it would.

The upside was that the blood didn't make me squemish.
