I was recently diagnosed with SVT of pregnancy, meaning that my heart is racing (usually about 170 beats per minute). I am told this is just because my body is not coping with the stress of this second pregnancy but that it should go away after little one is here.

But I now have to decide whether or not to accept beta blockers whilst pregnant. I don't even take tylennol! This worries me.

Have you had to take major meds when pregnant?

I also began SVT when pregnant with our first (in 1978), I still have it, it is pretty well controlled I have 'spells' every once in a while but fortunately they are few and far between now, won't even go into that.

Our daughter (who delivered in May the beautiful blue eyes in my avatar), had a horrific pregnancy, many problems was even life flighted at seven months in a helicopter ! Yeah, Nana lost a few years of her life that night !:( Anyway, she had to take and was pumped full of many many meds, everything came out just fine.......I'm sure they wouldn't prescribe something that is a danger to that sweet child you carry. However, if there is an option, I too would wait.

The trouble is that, as with many meds in pregnancy, their effect on the unborn child is unstudied. The logic is that to expose women deliberately for the sake of a study is unethical, so they expose them anyway when they prescribe, so why not just study those women?

The trouble is that, as with many meds in pregnancy, their effect on the unborn child is unstudied. I had no idea! Really I thought there was some type of study done, or they wouldn't give/prescribe it!!! Man, you can tell my generation huh? Seriously! I thought no drug would EVER be given to a pregnant woman that had not had some kind of tests done, assuring it's safety! wow, I'm kind a freaked out here!

I would imagine they do keep track of the women who are given medications while pregnant. However studying their effect on the unborn baby is most likely not done in an intense manner, other than maybe fetal heartbeat monitoring. To do more would require blood tests and samples which isn't something they are going to just do for a study to make the next lady more informed. All medicines given to pregnant women are a matter of risk assessment. Would the mother/child be better off if not given, or would they benefit from taking the medicine.
