Tandem nursing is when you are nursing two, different aged children at the same time. It most commonly occurs of course when two children are very close in age.
I was wondering if anyone here has done it.
Not that I am aware of, never knew it was possible to start off with. I thought you only nursed for the first year, then switched to something else, so your body can go ahead and get back into shape, and since the child is older would not need the breast milk.

You can nurse your child as long as they and you want to nurse them. Your body does not just stop making milk because your child reached a year old-it's a supply and demand situation. The nutritional and immune supporting benefits to the child NEVER stop, and the breast cancer protection for mum and general cancer protection for the child also never stops.
You can get your body back in shape sooner than that if you choose to. You just have to balance it right. The World Health Organisation now recommends that nursing should be for AT LEAST 2 years, and as long there after that both wish to continue. The AAP (American Academy of Paediatrics) says for AT LEAST 1 year, and for as long thereafter as both wish.
So don't fold to pop culture-your child's health is worth far more than appearance.

I knew someone who was nursing a toddler and an infant. Her biggest problem was eating enough! (The mom that is) With two nursing babies she needed a lot of calories. She did make sure to nurse the infant first, to make sure he got all he needed. The toddler was eating solid foods so nursing was more of a supplement for her.

Yeah, well even nursing one infant it can be hard to keep up with the amount of food you need to eat! When my daughter was around six months old was the peak and I must have been eating 3000 calories a day and was still losing weight.

I'm still nursing my 10 month old and my almost 3 year old. It IS hard to eat enough, especially since I already have a high metabolism. But it is definitely worth it for me. If you have any questions about tandem nursing, or nursing through pregnancy, i'd be happy to help out. :)

Honestly I couldn't imagine nursing two of such different ages. I know that my daughter has a much different nursing style compared to when she was a baby, and she is much more gentle. Nursing the two, with one who was nursing as often as she was as an infant-I am not sure I could cope with the pain, as much as I would like to try.
No one in person but online I've spoken to a few. It's an awesome thing to do. The benefits are just so great for all involved.
The biggest issue seems to be teaching the older child to wait his (or her) turn. Toddlers especially seem to think the world revolves around them.
Also, a lot of toddlers will wean during the pregnancy because the taste of the breastmilk changes with many women.
My sister-in-law is having this kind of trouble. She has a baby, before they got married by my brother. When they have gotten their first baby, the first become jealous of the new baby. Now, they are having trouble with two. They are always fighting.

I find the baby's latch to be more tolerable than the toddler's latch. I think she is lazier! ;) She did wean for a time, the 6 weeks after the baby came. I think she didn't like the colostrum.
