I've been through the temper tantrum phase with mine, but if you haven't been there yet or are going through it now, let's talk about it.

How are you handling temper tantrums?

Haven't been there yet, definitely not the part of parenting I'm looking forward to. My intentions are to talk calmly to my child at their level, use time-outs, and just try to be as patient and understanding as possible. Probably a very easy plan to make for someone who hasn't "been there" huh?

Not really. It's one of the many suggestions that everyone offers, but unless you have a child that listens, that's where things change.

One time my daughter was having a temper tantrum because I wasn't going to buy her something in the grocery store. She started yelling. I decided to let her stand there and yell and I walked off pretending not to know her. I was in the next aisle when she yells, "I'm going to tell the police that you go over speed bumps!"....real loud.

Others that were around me and it seemed like the whole store, started laughing at what she said. I knew right there and then that leaving them there to have their tantrums was not the way to go with my daughter. I stuck to my guns though. She still didn't get what she wanted.

My mom told me about some temper tantrums I had when I was 4, and I really hope my babies don't do that to me. I guess I laid down on the floor and kicked and screamed in the middle of a store one time because my mom wouldn't buy me all the childrens books they had. She said there were 2 long tables of them, stacked a foot high for some kind of special sale. She told me I could pick out 4... I wanted them all. Another time I fell asleep in the kichen and my dad carried me to bed, I kicked and screamed and threw a doll at him. I was a brat. I hope "brat" karma doesn't come back to bite me in the butt.

I am stubborn, my mother taught me well that way. I will get on the floor just like the kiddo and show them how its really done! :D I kid you not, she did this with me and I stopped real quick, I tempted her once in a store - she did it there too!!

My children were horrible. They were always having tantrums. I just beat their butts and locked them in their rooms. I simply refused to tolerate such behavior. They would eventually cry themselves out, and then I would let them out. There is NO reason you should have to suffer through such behavior!
