View Full Version : The worry of teenagers & drugs

My children are all grown up now and, thankfully, as far as I know anyway  were never tempted by drugs. But there were two things working in their favor - the area where we live has not (at least not to the extent of the cities) been contaminated by the influx of drugs and when they were in their teens they didn't have the peer pressure and temptation that appear to be prevalent today.

Young mums today must be constantly fearful of the threat of drugs. How do you handle telling your children about the dangers - bearing in mind children always think they know best?

Honesty. I waited a little too long with my oldest (see my thread on the topic!!).

Understand that kids will be getting info on drugs from the schools, from the government, from their peers, and from you. Your children should trust you. Be honest with them - they can tell when they're being jerked around. Tell them why you want them to stay away from drugs, but don't make anything up, or repeat disinformation. It will damage your bond of trust, making all your future parenting more difficult.
