Sorry guys if this isn't the type of thing that you would want to read, but sometimes us gals like to pass on the little tidbits, that in the long run, may save you some money.

Having a newborn and watching out if the baby is health can be frustrating. I know it was for me. My daughter developed a case of thrush in her mouth. One day there was there was little patches of white on her tongue, the inside of her cheeks and on her gums. At first I though it was the breast milk as she was becoming very good at the breast. She was fussy though after feeding and that wasn't like her.

I got an appointment with her Dr. and he looked at it and said it was thrush. I became scared. I thought that I had missed something in all my reading and preparing for her birth. It sounded like a terrible disease. I was a rotten mother

After the Dr. got me calmed down, he explained that it is very common in children, almost like cradle cap. What it primarily was, was a yeast infection. Now that got me started again. How could I have been so dumb? How could my baby have gotten it? I'd had them before I was pregnant and had a small case of it when I was carrying her. Again, I was a rotten mother...lol

All the Dr. kept telling me was that it wasn't my fault. It was part of the immunity process kicking in. He gave me a prescription for an antibiotic and sent me on my way.

My neighbor, who I swear was as old as the hills, told me that if I didn't want to use the anti-biotic, (which I didn't) that all I had to use was plain yogurt. Yes, yogurt. After I fed her to wipe the inside of her mouth out with a damp, clean rag, then lightly coat the inside of her mouth with the yogurt. The cultures that was in the yogurt would kill the bacteria in her mouth and it wouldn't upset her stomach like the anti-biotic would do. In the long run it would help her digestion.

Well, after checking with my grandmother and she said that she would mix yogurt in the water that she gave my mother in a bottle, that it would work also. I did use the old remedies and the thrush cleared up in about 7 days. My grandmother also reminded me to use some on my nipples as the bacteria was probably there too. Ummm....she also said to use it as a douche to get rid of the bacteria that had probably started the thrush in the first place.

Just recently I read an article about yeast infections in women and how some of the old remedies still work and a yogurt douche was one of them. Look at the commercial that is promoting women to eat yogurt. I know that when I eat yogurt it does help my digestion. I eat the vanilla yogurt, tastes better....lol

I wouldn't do any of those things, but whatever floats your boat. For one thing, we've been told for at least 10 years to not douche unless we're doing so for medical reasons under a doctor's care. Are douches even sold anymore? For another, yogurt is a food. Babies are not supposed to be introduced food until six months. But you, your grandmother, and the lady next door have medical degrees superior to your daughter's pediatrician's.

The yogurt wiped in the mouth was broken down by her saliva. It was a very thin coating. It wasn't like I had gave her a spoon full.

The yogurt in the water was very diluted and again the saliva broke it down some more. She never had any problems with it and didn't show any ill effects from it either. When I took her back, about a week later, her Dr. was surprised that it had cleared up so fast. When I admitted to him that I hadn't used the medicine he was shocked and asked how it cleared up. I told him and all he said was "that's one for the books." He said that not all of the old rememdies should be shelved. That there's still a lot out there that do work.

Some of the old ways do still work. I had colic as a baby. Nothing the Dr. was suggesting was doing any good. My grandmother went out and got fennel seed and catnip, make a weak tea of it and gave me some before every bottle of formula.

My mother told me that the fennel seed took care of the digestion problem and the catnip was a relaxant. Not only did I do well on that, but I was able to sleep at night, so did the house hold.

Like I said, whatever floats your boat. Your attitude of utter disregard for your pediatrician's orders is astounding. Especially after all your talk of being a bad mother because your daughter contracted thrush in the first place. It's not that home remedies are bad. Homeopathy hasn't lasted for thousands of years because of that. :D

You're absolutely right, it did float my boat or my daughter's in this case. If the pediatrician had felt that I had disregarded his treatment he would have said so, but that wasn't the case.

If more parents were aware of the fact that there was an option for them, to use a natural or organic medicinal source, they would try that first.

More and more Dr's, in any specialty, are looking into homeopathy as an alternative treatment if all the current conventional treatments are not making a difference. Some will opt for the alternative forms first if the malady doesn't warrant more aggressive forms of treatment.

As for my concern of being a bad mother, it was genuine. What new mother doesn't take things to heart when there is something that can't be explained other than something that they missed? Who is usually looked at first?

And yes, douches are still sold. How could you miss them?

Yes they are. Haven't you heard of Massengil? I've never heard warnings against using them.
