View Full Version : Ultrasounds estimating weight?

A friend of mine was just induced, and then sectioned, because an ultrasound estimated her baby's weight to be over 9 lbs at 38 weeks. She had the baby, who weighed in at 7lbs even and needed two nights in the NICU for breathing assistance. Baby obviously wasn't ready to be born. Am I not the only one who thinks weight estimates are the biggest crock of crap ever? I just feel so bad for my friend, having all that trauma over false assumptions.

They are indeed the biggest crock ever. My youngest was estimated at 9lbs at about that same time, plus or minus half a pound. I still carried to term and delivered at 7lb 9.9oz. Long way off the 10lber they said she might be by term.

Sounds like the biggest crock I've ever heard of. When did they change from letting the baby stay in as long as possible to term toward delivering whenever they decide to? I sure as heck wouldn't be letting them induce me just because they thought my baby would be too big when I was supposed to deliver.

PurpleFDU, you just hit the nail on the head. A patient ultimately has control over their healthcare. Yes, doctors do have a great amount of knowledge but that doesn't mean they are always right. People in medicine make mistakes just like everyone else.
