View Full Version : When Do You Let Your Children Start Using The Stove?

I was very hesitant to let my kids start using the stove. I was so afraid that they would burn themselves or set the kitchen on fire. I had a gas stove so it was really dangerous.

I did eventually let them start out with something real simple...like boiling water for tea or jello...lol. We moved up from there to adding eggs to boil in the water and hotdogs.

How did you handle teaching your children to cooking in the kitchen?

It takes awhile for them to graduate to the stove, but I always let them start baking before I let them use the top of the stove. They were around 10. Things like vegetable type casseroles, meat loaves, biscuits and cakes are a safe way to start with kids in the kitchen.

With my daughter, before I even let her near the flame on the stove, I made her tie her hair back, make sure that she didn't have any loose clothing and that she had clothing that was protective as well. As for letting them use the cutlery, well I kept the first aid kit on hand...lol
