Burns

My older daughter forgot to unplug her flat iron and the 3 year old got a little burn on it. It is not bad. I am just wondering how you treat a burn with a 3 year old.

I usually use honey on burns. Just a little dab since your body warmth will make it melt and run. Then place a piece of gauze over it and secure it with medical tape. If it is really small, a large bandage should handle it just as well. Honey is an antibiotic and has been used for many years to heal skin issues as well as other problems. Raw honey would be good if you can get it but it is lots more expensive than the regular heat processed honey you find in the stores.

It needs to be raw to have the proper benefits-but I wouldn't put anything like that on a burn. On a tiny person, a burn the size of a ten cent coin can be dangerous-it can cause shock. I would see a doc, and take their advice.

My daughter fell on a kerosene heater when she was 4 and we ran cold water over it and wrapped them in cool cloths till we got her to the hospital. The doctor said we did the best thing we could do. Do not put ice on it for some reason it is a bad idea. I would take her in to get her checked out though.

Ice is bad because it is too cold and can damage the skin further. If it's a first-degree burn (just red, no blistering or anything), then you can just keep it wrapped with antibiotic ointment and it should heal up fine.

If it's a second-degree burn (blistering, but no charring) then you will want to keep it wrapped but it would be good to use silvadene (or colloidal silver) on it. If you don't have any, you can also put cold (but not frozen) used tea bags on it - the tannin in tea soothes and helps heal the burn.

A third-degree burn (charring) should ALWAYS be seen by a doctor for treatment.

I saw a documentary once about burns. They have been working with potato peels and it works wonderful on them. So any time there is a burn in the house we run to the potatoes. Of course, you should always consult with your doctor.

I have been accident prone my entire life so I can understand, but like most others I had to learn by trial and error on myself. Ice is very bad, I think I have never felt such a nasty pain before, I never knew about the potato skins though.
