Childhood Obesity

Hi my name is Alex. I am studying A Level Media and for this I must research a topic that interests me. I have chosen to research children and the media. My specific area is based on the hypothesis;

The effects of advertising on childhood obesity

If you could answer these questions and give me your thoughts on how advertising affects childhood obesity this would be really helpful.

Do you think it is just advertising that effects childhood obesity?

Do you think household income effects diets and childhood obesity?

How far do you think lifestyle effects childhood obesity?

Have you heard of the junk food advert ban that was put in place, if yes how do you feel about this?

What is your view on Jamie Oliver's School Dinners program?

Thank you for your time

1. No
2. I think it could if the income was very low and they just had to eat the kinds of food they could get, but for the most part, I don't think it does.
3. Definitely. This is especially true for children who basically watch tv and play on the computer and nothing else.
4. I think it's great. I don't think they need to brainwash our children with junk food advertisements. That has a lot to do with why children are so fat.
5. Don't know anything about them.

No I don't think advertising alone is the cause of childhood obesity. There are many factors including but not limited to lifestyle and income level. Income level is overcome fairly easily with food banks, free school lunches and snack packs for home, and state assistance. Lifestyle is a factor when parents do not make their children get active everyday. I think that while a ban on junk food advertising is great, it will not solve the problem. Children don't usually buy the junk food now do they? I think Jaime Olivers program is fantastic.

Yes, you are right, advertising alone is not the cause of childhood obesity. Childhood obesity is the result of caloric imbalance and is mediated by genetic, behavioral and environment factor.
