As my oldest child gets closer to adulthood, and closer to the age where I could potentially become a grandmother, I consider what it would be like to have a grandchild fairly close in age to my youngest child. Have any of you been in that situation? My mother was only 3 years older than I am now when she became a grandmother, and here I am with a toddler in the house!

A friends older sister has three children all in their early 20's but has already become a grandmother. The kicker is she did the same to her mother at the same age.

I actually grew up in this situation. I am the only child of my father's second marriage. So, by the time I came along my older half sisters already were married and some had kids. I have a niece and a nephew that are older than I am by a couple years. It didn't really affect me other than we always thought of each other more as first cousins than my actually being their aunt.

I've known friends who grew up in the situation and it must have been very strange for them. I'm not sure honestly that I would have liked to be there myself.

I am an expecting mother at age 36, will be 37 when I have it, I just found out that my son's girlfriend is pregnant, she is as far along as I. At first I was very sad, but then I have realized that I was that age when I had my son, and that I made my mother a grandmother very young, I was hoping to break the cycle but I guess not. Hopefully these two babies will be very close.

My two youngest daughters are very close in age to our oldest granddaughter. It has never been a problem. They love each other dearly. It took me a little bit to "feel" like a grandma, but I thoroughly enjoy my two different roles.
