Cutting the umbilical cord

Did you or someone close to you make the decision to cut the umbilical cord yourself? In my case my mother was the proud umbilical cord cutter, and up till now, she has my daughter's umbilical cord stump somewhere in her house. She has mine too (!).

Maybe I'd like to retrieve them someday for keepsake.

I am too squeamish and my husband is even worse. I don't think I can do it. I am interested in keeping the cord though in case we need it later on if the baby gets sick. We are looking into on of the banks that are announced at the OB/GYN offices.

My two previous births my husband cut the umbilical cord, and I expect him to do the honors with our third baby. He didn't even blink an eye. He has a very strong stomach.

I had the honor of cutting the umbilical cord. It was a very surreal experience. Cutting the physical bond between a mother and child is very spiritual. I was then more than ever determine to be part of the spiritual bond of our family. As we wait for the new baby, I look forward to unite us even more.

I actually found it to be a very good experience.

I believe in some places when you give birth the doctors cut the cord and then take them to a table and you are able to do another symbolical cut.

This may be odd, but I looked at it like the opening of a new building, and your there to cut the ribbon

If you do decide to cut the cord, one of the things they don't tell you is it's like you've been given one of those pairs of kids scissors and you're trying to cut a piece of material. It can take a few snips to cut all the way through.

During the birth the whole thing was so full on already that it's sort of just one extra thing.

I'll do it again

Yeah, I had chance to cut it and I did it, when my wife gave birth to my son. It was very... hmm, deep experience.
