Donating Eggs

I know there is a thread about recieving donated eggs but what about being an egg donor. Would you do it? Not necessarily to get paid, but just out of kindness. Knowing that you can help create life for someone else?

I've thought about this, but the fact that they use hormone therapy to help increase your egg count makes me incredibly leery as increased hormones could put you at a higher risk of some cancers down the road.

I honestly don't think I could. I would always wonder if there were any of "my" kids out there. Any biological half siblings. I just couldn't do it. Besides, I'd rather that person give an already existing child a chance at a good home.

I did a little research about this and there are just to many "if's". They give you hormone therapy and I just do not believe that is good for my body. If my sister found out she could not have children and wanted one of my eggs because it was family then I might think about it.

I actually am an egg donor. I donated my eggs about 17 years ago. I was leery about it, but for many personal reasons, I did it. I was happy to do it, and I am happy to think that perhaps I helped someone else become a mom. Now that I have my own 3 kids, I am even happier about it. I know that biology doesn't equal maternity, if that makes sense. I believe that any child who was conceived with my egg donation was a very wanted child, and I hope and pray, a very happy one.

That is a wonderful quick story there Urbanmom. I know a handful of people that have donated (either eggs or sperm) and they were all happy to help out. Many are unable to have on their own and if you can help, and its something that doesn't make you wonder your ethics or anything I say go for it!

I have never though about being an egg donor. I would have to consider carefully the procedure involved, if I would be at any risk whatsoever.

Urbanmom-That is a great story. Did you have any difficulties with any part of it. I think that it is wonderful that you were able to share life with someone who may possibly not have been able to have it otherwise.

Gosh, I'm SORRY I never came back to this thread, how rude to leave you hanging for so long!

Let's see, difficulties. Well, first it was awhile ago and I forget the names of the meds (I recall one was Pergonal which they don't use anymore) but there were 3 different meds. I used one for a few days to suppress ovulation, then another to start stimulation (this was done in order to sync me up with the bio mom) and then at the end, I needed to take 2 shots of this final medication to push the folicles along towards the "finish" as it were. Well, those last 2 shots were intramuscular!! HUGE needles, and I had to shoot them myself into my buttocks. That was really hard. Just looking at that needle and saying "I'm going to use this thing". I mean, it must have been 3 inches. But I did it! At that point, I didn't want to back out.

Anyway, that was the hardest part.
