If you are expecting identical twins (or triplets) please visit the tttsfoundation.org website to learn more about a deadly disorder that affects 10-15% of all monochorionic pregnancies: Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS). This syndrome affects twins or higher order multiples that share a placenta. Because TTTS frequently leads to the death of one or both babies, early detection and intervention is crucial. It is recommended that all women with identical twin pregnancies get at least WEEKLY ultrasounds from week 16 until delivery to monitor for the development of TTTS. Also, if you experience any of the following symptoms, please notify your doctor immediately:
* sudden weight gain
* sudden growth in abdomen
* shortness of breath
* pain or discomfort in your belly
* sudden edema (retained water in the ankles)
Though your chances are not high of developing this disorder, it is definitely worth being educated about what you are watching for!! If you know anybody who is expecting identicals, please tell them about the TTTS Foundation so they can also educate themselves. Knowledge saves lives!!
