Folic Acid

The doctor told me that I need to take more folic acid. I am not one for taking pills. Is there anything I can eat naturally that will make up for the folic acid pills?

I also do not like taking pills and my doctor suggested eating the following items this should help you:
  • Dark green, leafy vegetables
  • Whole wheat bread
  • Lightly cooked beans and peas
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Sprouts
  • Oranges and grapefruits
  • Liver and other organ meats
  • Poultry
  • Fortified breakfast cereals and enriched grain products

My wife doesn't like taking any type of pills either. She won't even take a Tylenol when not pregnant unless she has had a headache for 3 days straight. We have added a lot of the items listed above to our diet and she said she did the same with her 4 year old and he is perfectly healthy.

Get Plenty of Folic Acid

I know taking pills is not everyone's cup of tea, and during pregnancy pills can be even harder to swallow. Folic acid is a HUGE preventative measure against birth defects like spina bifida. Changes in diet or pills if you can take them, can help you have healthy baby. So do whatever you can to get enough.
