Help! I Got Bitten!

I hope that someone can help me! My daughter is just two weeks old, and nursing last night she started to let go. She seemed to realise what was happening and clamped down-and those pointy little gums took a chunk out of my nippple

I'm in pain-feeding her almost makes me cry every time she latches. What can I do?

Try not to think about when she has a full set of teeth? Seriously, my 15 month old bites me on occasion, and those teeth are harsh. But the pain isn't lasting, only a day if that. You could put some arnica gel on it to help.

Good advice, I remember when my sister had this issue and had the fear to never feed again for the sheer thought of it happening once more was too much to handle for her.

Well, it's been several days and still it hurts. Heck, there's a chunk missing from my nipple so it's bound to hurt. It's just not healing well because each time it starts to she re-injures it.

I had a similar problem when my little one was tiny. I used a lanolin nipple ointment religiously-but the bad news was that the pain didn't stop for about five weeks. It did stop in the end though, and it's worth it to give your little one a good start.

You are probably going to have to wait it out, however, I would check your positioning. Just my reading your description it sounds like baby is latching on to just the nipple. When she is nursing the actual nipple should be pretty far back in her mouth. Her gums should be on the aerola, which shouldn't aggrevate the injury too much.

Also try rubbing a little milk on the nipple and letting them air dry for a bit. Best tip my midwife ever gave me!

Oh gosh, I know I will not look forward to getting bit when I have a new baby! It is nice to read the suggestions here to know ahead of time what to do about it. I really want to nurse my baby, when I have one, but I don't want to get bit all the time!
