Help with 8 year old

My daughter has never been overweight before but this year she has taken to watching to much TV and not being active. I have been taking her to the park and trying to watch what she eats. My question is, how do I explain this to her in a way that won't hurt her self esteem?

Just educate her on how to be healthy. Avoid words like fat. I think if you really explain to her the importance of staying healthy and the dangers of being over weight then everything will be fine.

Thanks for the response. I have been trying to pick my words very carefully for that exact reason. It is a hard adjustment for her. She got so used to sitting around that she tires very quickly.

I think also that if you do things with her and put it in terms of how you want to stay fit and healthy, she won't see it as something targeted solely at her but something that even you do to help your health.

I agree do things together. Sign up at the Y for swim classes or something. Work out as a family so that she doesn't feel like it is just her, but something that the family is doing to be healthier for the future.

I agree with the others make it a family affair and get out and do stuff together that's fun and helps her stay more active.

Yes. I agree with the family things and an activity. Plus then the activity will be a weekly thing and she might enjoy it too.
