Here's a kicker

It makes me so sad to see so many unhealthy children. We used to just kick the kids out of the house. We knew they were safe. Now you have to pretty much be on top of your kids at all times. You never know who's waiting to snap them up. So it's a lot easier to keep them in the house now. They just don't get the exercise they used to.

What do we do?

So many things have changed in the past decade or so. I was just telling a friend the other day, that I remember when we never locked our house or car doors at night before bed........now you have to - no matter what part of town you live in.

As for the exercise, I try and make sure my kiddos both get a ton of it. I don't want them to be lazy like me, I run around alot (mostly in circles) but I have never been much for exercise (I try 3x a week but could do better). I always had a high metabolism, so I never really bothered, now that I am getting older though - I got to.

That's one of the things I enjoy about living in a rural area. It's safer. I know it's not a lot safer, but somewhat. We also have a big yard with woods and dogs. With three dogs, I don't have to worry so much about strangers sneaking up and snatching kids.

I guess one of the best ways to get your children to exercise is through sports. We used to walk around the neighborhood. Around and around. Not always such a good idea anymore. Sports are organized and supervised. They're a good way to exercise and you get the added benefit of building self confidence and they help give feelings of accomplishments.
