I was talking with my brother-in-law the other day. He has 2 kids. He says he and his wife are looking to move cause their house is getting too small. He has 3 bedrooms: he and his wife sleep in one, the 2 boys sleep in another and they use the 3rd like a multipurpose room (they also have a den though). I told him, since his kids are still kind of small (under 7yrs old each) he still had lots of growing potential in the house he currently has, but I don't think he was trying to hear what I was saying. How much space is really necessary for comfortable living?

I agree with you. Babies and small children don't need that much space. I would rather save the money for later when it will be necessary. Things just get more expensive as they grow.

I think it's a personal thing. Some families are fine in smaller homes, others want/need bigger ones. I have one child and a four bedroom house. We're hoping to move in the next couple years and I don't need all that bedroom space, but I don't think I could deal with downsizing the common rooms (den, living room, kitchen) now that I've gotten used to having lots of elbow room.

Actually I agree that small children don't need so much space, especially if they're of the same sex. I even think that they wouldn't feel comfortable to sleep alone in their own bedrooms.

Well, I know a family that has six kids, and they live in just under 1300 square feet. The kids range from 17 to 1, and two of them are girls. It's a three-bedroom house, so the four boys share a room. I think they could use more space
