To me with my kids the simplest toys were always the ones they enjoyed the most. I would let them play with my pots and pans, boxes, and stuff like that. They now have some of the best imaginations I have seen.

So true, Lara. My one year old loves to play with a pot and a wooden spoon. She has a ton of toys, but she always goes for the stuff that is so basic. My husband brought home a case of beer last night and left it on the floor by the fridge and at the moment she is sitting on the floor stacking beer cans, taking them of the box and putting them back in, and rolling them around the floor. She has three different sets of blocks she could be doing that with, but the beer cans fascinate her, lol. Whatever works. And thank goodness she won't remember this

My niece loves to grab the dogs tail when he sleeps next to her. I would say that is a free toy, but it has to be fed and walked. For babies that young simple toys are good as the others were saying. Maybe something that lights up and plays music and stuff when you push buttons too.
