If you don't breastfeed...

For those moms who don't breastfeed, have you ever gotten a lecture from another mother who felt that you should? How do you deal with people who disapprove of how you feed your baby?

I ask because it's happened to me, and I'm sure that I can't be the only one who has had a similar issue.

Even total strangers

I had difficulties with breastfeeding with my other children and have already been told to expect the same this time around. I plan on trying to breastfeed at least the first six weeks, though, to help protect the baby from allergies since I have many.

I've had total strangers ask me if I plan on breastfeeding or not and then proceed to tell me how wrong I am for not planning until the baby is a year old. First of all, what makes them think the personal details are any of their business? Second of all, it take a lot of nerve to scold a total stranger, don't you think?

Geesh, some people's kids.

I'm a firm believer in breastfeeding myself but I do know of several moms who for one reason or another, have difficulty in doing so. It's none of my business and I make sure I don't interfere - I just assume that they know what they are doing.

That's the thing that gets me - complete strangers don't know what's going on in my life that I don't breastfeed, whether it be a choice or something that I have a lot of trouble with. I respect anybody who makes their own personal choice to do it or not do it, as long as they don't prod me about it.

I've definitely heard many stories of people getting loads of crap for not doing what complete strangers think they should with their body and their baby. I would have to say if someone tried that with me I'd tell them they were my boobs and my body and my baby and my decision.

Well, I'm breastfeeding, couldn't imagine not at least trying, but that's my choice. I have friends that bottle feed and others that breastfeed. It's their child, it's their choice what to feed it. All I can say is bottlefeeding looks like a lot of work, LOL!

I fed three of babies with formula and they were all healthy. With my first one, I was told repeatedly that he would healthier with breast milk. I told everyone, nicely, that this was my baby and I would do with him as I felt was best. After a while, everyone just left me alone about it.

I don't think any of my friends or people I know brestfed so I didn't have anyone telling me I was doing it wrong. But I'm thinking about brestfeeding this time. I'm not sure.

Go for it, Lucie! (And don't take that as me lecturing you! )

Personally, I've never been "lectured" by anyone about breastfeeding. I kind of just gave it some thought, picked up a breastfeeding book (to read up on it) and decide to just do it!
