I'm so tired of people saying that if you are larger you must eat junk and not get exercise.

I was "obese" at a size 8 at 14. You know why? Because I am only five foot five inches and weighed almost 180lbs. Solid muscle but the family doctor told me I was obese and needed to lose weight. Since I was already walking or biking the two miles to school daily, both ways (not uphill and wearing shoes ) riding horses 5 days a week plus spending all weekend biking and playing football I couldn't exactly schedule in more exercise. I was even doing aerobics and weight lifting at school twice a week. There's numbers, then there is genetics. I have large, thick bones. They are like cement and don't break (which is familial on my mom's side).

So while I could have cut out the occasional cheeseburger and fries on the weekends, it wouldn't have really done more than shave of a pound or two overall.

Something that I've noticed in my family that has occured concerning weight. It seems that all of the grandsons, 5 of them in all, have been born chubby, above normal wieght boys. They tend to stay chubbier than normal until they hit about the age of 12. Then they have all shot up and slimmed down. All of my sisters' boys did this and sure enough my son did too when he hit that age.

I think heredity plays a certain role, simply because different people have different body types, bone structures and metabolisms. All of these things are inherited. BUT much of what we chalk up to heredity is actually learned habits. A child may learn to eat unhealthy because his or her parents do and then later call it heredity when its actually just learned. I am overweight, yet all of my children are nicely built. Two of them are even "scrawny." While 3 of them have had moments of plumpness its usually been in the dead of winter or just before a growth spurt and has lasted only a matter of weeks.

I agree with twillight .. it isn'tcompletely because of the heridaty but you have that tendancy to put on weight.. so need to take proper care right from beginning
