Is the kicking painful?

Does it hurt when the baby starts kicking? Is it terribly uncomfortable? Please tell me what to expect.

No, kicking can be slightly bothersome, but not painful. The baby becomes your gentle reminder when you need to eat, move or you need to move an elbow...lol

The only few and rare times either of my children would kick and it was a tad more than bothersome, was a direct kick to the no-no area (aKa the birth canal), this did not feel so hot, but you get used to it, and its not as bad as I'm sure you reading this are imaging.......you have a life inside of you, those random kicks you get, strong or not, just mean you are making a baby in there and the baby is just doing what babies do.

At times it could become a little uncomfortable. But that was only on days when the baby was being really active. Most of the time, I though it was the coolest thing. Feeling the baby moving around. Deciding if it was a foot or a hand. Sometimes you and others can even see the movement.

I'm trying to imagine what this is going to feel like. I'm not having much luck. I don't guess this is a feeling someone could describe. Maybe compared to something I would know about? Please just don't tell me it's anything like a nine month long stomach ache. I hate stomach aches.

When you first start to feel it, it's like butterflies in your stomach. Just a fluttering. As the baby gets bigger and stronger, it's more like someone prodding you with their finger. And it's nothing like stomach ache. You're equating it with pain, which it isn't. It's more like if you were sitting on a lumpy chair- a bit uncomfortable but certainly bearable.

I loved it and used to lie flat on the couch so I could watch him moving around. Often you can see when they roll or change position by the undulation of your belly. Generally it's only uncomfortable the closer you get to being around the middle months as they're stronger and still have room to move around a lot, especially when they stick a foot or elbow under your ribs or something. Usually a gentle nudge from you is enough to get them to move it though. After that they simply don't have the same space to move around and it lessens, though you'll still feel plenty of kicks.

Enjoy it! It really is one of the most thrilling things about pregnancy.

I never thought the baby was painfull.Sometimes the foot would get underneath my rib cage and feel unpleasant but not painful. I always loved feeling my babies movements.

Sometimes it does get painful, but normally it's when I get in a position I shouldn't be in, like bending over too far. I would get a good kick. For the most part though it's not bad. In the first instance, you will be smiling each time you feel the kick.

My friend's doctor explained it like having your cheek poked with a finger. Its not painful, but its a little unusual at the beginning. I know her boyfriend has felt it at night a couple times when he got too close and was squishing her stomach. So the explanations sound pretty reasonable. Only a mom would smile while her kid kicked her, lol.

I had some very painful kicks at times. The most painful were always the same two places-a kick to the cervix which could make my eyes water, or a kick to the ribs. She woke me up on more than a few occasions, when I had rolled over in bed too much onto my stomach. She didn't like it, and would give me a kick. If she caught me right, on the edge of my rib, boy did it hurt-enough to take my breath away.

For what it's worth there have been cases known of broken ribs by baby kicking. When she came out the nurse commented on how strong she was-she had a hard time holding her leg straight to give her the vitamin K. Of course, I was not surprised.
