Jr.?

Is anyone consider naming their boy after the daddy? Are people still doing that these days or that "so over" now? I like my husband's name, if we had a little boy I wouldn't mind having a junior.

I would say that giving your child one of his fathers name is ok. I have always been against having a kid who ended up Jr. This is because I had a brother who was and he was always called everything that he never wanted to be called.

When you give a child their own name they do not have to live up to anything but their own expectations of themselves. where as if you are a junior you are often expected to be like Sr.

I'd never put Jr at the end of my son's name. Just doesn't seem right somehow.

I knew a Larry in high school, and by Jr. year (odd enough) he started going my Jr, as in J-R.......not Larry. We never though about it with my son (previous relationship), and never needed to since I knew my 2nd would be a girl. Daughters grandfathers name is her fathers named reversed (swap first and middle names over).

I think it is good to name a child after it's parent and remind it where it comes from. These days it seems that kids think they need to be the center of everything. It would be a good thing I think to reinforce these kind of naming policies just to remind the child there is more to life than them.

But if I had a boy and named him after my husband, I'd have this urge to deck anyone that tried to call him "junior". That just sounds kinda hick to me. lol

Jr. sounds cool, but I don't like it being on someone's name because it's like they're "not as good as the original". For instance, Dale Earnhardt Jr. or Ken Griffey Jr.

In my family many of the boys had their father's name as their middle name. What matters is what you like obviously, but it's one way to compromise. Even if you didn't use Jr, others likely would.

I'd be worrying about what happened as he grows up when you had two people with the same name in the house when the mail arrived. Is there a derivative of the name? Even just a slight change in spelling might be suffice to ward off the Jr tag.
