Little Ones, Colds and Vomiting

If your little one has a cold and is vomiting from all the mucous that they are swallowing, do you keep feeding them? If she eats more than a few bites, it comes back. But she is miserable not eating.

Should I just let her eat to make her feel better, or should I stop her eating and only give her little bits here and there till she stops vomiting.

My recommendation is what you are alluding to: little bits of food, over a very long period. I haven't had to deal with that (when my kids have colds, they don't vomit, they only vomit with the stomach flu), but that seems best. And maybe some ginger ale or cola with the bubble stirred out to settle the tummy.

Sometimes even liquids, when consumed too quickly can cause vomiting when the tummy is upset. There is little point in feeding a full sized meal if it will all come right back out. Better a few sips every ten or fifteen minutes, and an occasional bite, as that way there is less chance of dehydration (and hence hospitalisation).

You definitely don't want to feed her just to make her happy. She needs to learn that taking proper care when you are sick will keep it from lasting longer or getting worse more likely than not. And vomiting car wear down the enamel of the teeth as well as burn the lining of the esophagus, etc. If she's insistent try setting a timer to spread out the bites/sips so she knows the time has passed and not a moment longer.

Small picks of food and drinks are good when sick, just think of how you are when your sick. You know those drinks are important just for a little one as they would be for yourself.

My youngest is very easy to start vomiting when she is sick. The doctor told us to just not feed her for a while. Make sure she has plenty to drink unless she is vomiting very much- it can make it worse. But you should ask your doctor.

Try saltine crackers or dry toast. They worked for us when we were pregnant and they will also help our little ones when they get sickly tummies. Do encourage her to drink so she doesn't get dehydrated. Try watered down 7-up or Sprite. Even better is Pedilyte. Popsicles are a good way also to get small amounts of liquids down and kids love them. The cold can be soothing as well. The sugar in them may be a problem though. Try some juice ones or even Pedilyte ones. Or make your own with diluted juice.
