Making Your Own Babyfood

I got a fancy food processor as a wedding gift and have been giving serious thought to making my own baby food this summer from my garden. Has anyone had any luck doing this?

I want to learn, too

Ever since I found out that baby foods often have additives like extra sugar, salt and even preservatives, I am exploring other options. I would love to hear from others who have made their own baby food for ideas or recipes. Also, any ways to store homemade baby food other than freezing it?

I made both my kids food. they never ate from a jar. It's really, really easy. Just a little breast milk or water, a little bit of whatever you are eating (that is baby appropriate) and blend it up in the food processor, or just smash it up with a fork. Easy as pie, fresh, and wonderful. I never froze it, because I always fed them what we were eating, or if it wasn't appropriate, I'd feed them fruit or sweet potato.

Easy way to freeze

I used to just puree what we were eating using my blender and a bit of water or formula. Just avoid anything that infants are recommended not to have, like honey.

Easy way to store is to freeze in ice cube trays. When frozen, pop out and store in a freezer bag labeled with date and type of food. It's easy to pull out however many cubes you need and pop in the microwave for dinner.

I plan on trying to make my own but with two it depends on how much time I will have. I may have to buy some but hopefully not much. I've been reading the labels on jars to prepare though, and although some baby food has salt and sugar, it seems most don't. Don't they have to list all the ingredients?

They do have to list all the ingredients and many have moved back to having just the raw ingredients not additives to them. I normally steam fruits and vegetables and freeze them once a week when my mom takes the baby for the day so I can shop alone. Then I can defrost and smash them up as need be to go with what we are eating in the food processor. I'd never thought of freezing them in cubes though.

I'm also thinking of saving money

Although some of the companies have stepped back from adding preservatives and other things, they seem to go up in price the more they leave out of the jar. Since we're working on paying down debts and building savings, we've been trying to save on expenses. I thought making my own baby food would not only be good for the baby but also good for our budget.
