I am such a mean mom

My kids want a wii. I told them if they want it, save up for it. I'm not paying this time. They have a perfectly good PS3 at home but the wii is the new "in thing". They looked at me and said "but then we'd have to work on summer vacation!" I said yep. Now they're off sulking.

It sounds like you have teen drama going on, if that's the case. I agree with you, let them work for it. It's time they get more involved in taking responsibility (I don't know how much you have been giving them). But I support the move.

Please tell them that I am on your side and I have endorsed your decision. Especially as they they already have a working game, it's their doing if they need something else. Don't let them back you down..

How exactly is Nintendo Wii the "new thing" if it came out the same week as the PS3?

Not to mention the Nintendo Wii is much cheaper than the PS3, so maybe they made a poor decision by choosing Playstation 3 over it?

I play games myself, and I can tell you that Nintendo Wii is a far more entertaining system in my opinion.

Maybe convince them to trade in their PS3 to a game store, and have them get a Wii in it's place?

I'm a tad clueless about video games so I let them have their choice. They chose the PS3. Now they have to live with their choice. I tell them, no one has died yet from lack of a wii. They weren't happy at that one.

I completely agree with you and am glad to see a parent instilling some values, financially. The want and get cycle leads to adults who simply cannot manage their money-you are doing them a favour.

I remember when my brother was 11 and I was 13 we really, really wanted a super nintendo, but my mom wouldn't buy us one because we had the nintendo and "it works perfectly fine". So we got a paper route and busted our booties all summer and we saved almost enough money for it, and our mom paid the rest at the end of summer. It felt great that it was ours and we'd earned it.

Yup I agree. This way you won't come off as the horrible meanest mom on the planet They learn that they have to make sacrificies sometimes in order to get what they want. They can't have everything! Plus you'll get them off you back for a bit too, well... until a PSP4 comes out that is!
