Naming Parties?

I was listening to the radio while running car pool today and I heard Ryan Seacrest talking about being invited to his friend's baby naming party. Apparently the baby was already born. Has anyone heard of these and if so what the heck are they and what do you do at them?

Never heard of it, and not that interested as well. I wouldn't want to have a lot of people at my house, picking a name for my child when naming a baby should be meaningful and private, in my opinion.

I agree with you Mama. It is bad enough getting input from well intentioned family members to actually ask people to help. I gave my husband a list of the names I wanted and let him give his input. I know it sounds unfair to be the one with the last word, but if I am going to be the one carrying the baby for nine months, I should at least get to do something good.

I've never heard of that!! Fascinating. My husband and I discuss names and agree on one, usually before the baby is born. I think we've had names for all of them at least by the 6th month!

Yeah, that's ridiculous. I don't think I would let everybody choose a name for my baby the funny way. There is chance they would just make fun of it and the baby as well.

I think I heard the same thing and I think he was talking about the jewish Hebrew naming (not the english first name). And that is done with the Rabbi present. The name is already choosen but there is a ceremony.

Right...did he ask if he was suppose to bring a gift or how it worked. I know people who have had them and the invite says no gift. Right, isn't that what he was talking about?

Was that the case? I have misunderstood then. In that case, I think there is nothing wrong to do the ceremony. The name is already chosen, OK, but could we ask the Rabbi to name the kid if needed?
